Bruce, I agree that it would have been helpful for the article to have at least included a sentence or two on Goldman's many frauds. But this would probably just be preaching to the choir, so to speak, because I would think that most readers of WSJ's many articles on Goldman are probably familiar with the frauds and may even be, as the article points out, tired of reading about them. As there's nothing more stale then yesterday's news, More
Jed, before you discard the notion of responsibility... I would urge you to read Schweizer's book, Architects of Ruin. See who really applied the heat that caused the meltdown.. And, look at who BHO has relied on to fix the financial morass that the Congress, community activists, the Dept of Justice, Countrywide, Fanne Mae, and Freddie Mac wrought. . OOPs guess what, he has drawn in many of those same firebugs that caused it to try More
Great! A step in the right direction. Watch out, though. Don't let a big bonus wipe out this compensation correction. Corporate hr executive compensation should return to what it was ca. 1980 in terms of multiple of minimum wage (e.g. 50 X min wage). This is before the corporate raiders showed the corporate executives that there are ways to siphon corporate assets into their own pockets. A slight adjustment (e.g. logarithmic) could More
Steven, I am afraid that employers like you are part of the problem. The Comprehensive Immigration Reform back in 1986 created an enforcement concept that required employers to check documents while collecting information required for employees I-9 forms. Employers fought this action since it would have inhibited their ability to hire illegal aliens. Now we have and should require E-Verify for ALL employees and improve the system. More
Thanks, Scott, for the reasoned and insightful treatment of liberty. I am glad you pointed out the difference between directly and indirectly infringing on rights. I believe that to be an adult adhd symptoms means that you are responsible for your own actions; if you cannot live responsibly, then you should lose the privileges of adulthood, like voting, driving a car and indulging in the adult pleasures. Do you believe we have the More
Steve, I don't believe that. Is there any evidence for it? Has anyone examined companies that fire 10% of their onboarding new employees every year, with companies that don't, to see which does better in the long run? In the decades after WWII, the U.S. was the industrial leader of the world. At that time, most of the Fortune 500 companies, and a lot of smaller companies, gave their employees lifetime jobs, except for serious misconduct. More
Following Ms. Flanagan's logic, we should do a thorough review of all college and university campuses. Dorms where things have gone wrong should also be shut down, especially those co-ed ones where guys co-habitate with gals, share bathrooms, party with them and definitely cross boundaries of university imposed propriety. Don't forget your lawsuit potential there (also consider suit against the universities for running out of condoms More
Washington is addicted to money and this addiction relapse will follow the pattern/steps of every other. Here are the steps: 1. Admitting that one cannot control one's addiction or compulsion; 2. Recognizing a higher power that can give strength; 3. Examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member); 4. Making amends for these errors; 5. Learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior; 6. Helping others who More
The author is correct in that the use types of marketing information makes the web a more useful marketing tool, which in turn allows marketing to subsidize services. Free services are much easier to use; there is a natural hesitancy to pay in advance for a knowledge service without knowing if it is any good. However, the veil of privacy is pierced a bit too far. The technology exists to maintain greater anonymity. Regulations would More
Spoken like a true anti-abortion zealot. 1. Abortion has not exploded. It's just become more acceptable, less stigmatized, to talk about it. In the 'good old days' investing in coat hangers was a booming business, as was sending 'wayward' girls to Gladney. 2. Out of wedlock births cannot similarly explode because of the pill. That makes no sense. They explode because of the difficulty of getting an abortion, or, the again decreased More
