I agree with Andrew on a few points. I don't think the pirates are the big problem, I think what happens after we eliminate the Somalian pirates is what we are most worried about. There is no doubt we have the man power, technology, and money to wipe out the Somalian pirates but what do we do after that. Somalia could be easily embarrassed taken over by Al Queda which would be a much bigger problem than the pirates themselves. Don't More
I have to agree with you! While GS may be unethical companies, they are smarter than the unethical people in congress and the senate. Why was Glass Stegall repealed? GS is guilty of making money and they were able to manipulate AIG and the US Gov't into poor decisions. So what are they guilty of? If as someone said earlier, if you can prove fraud, put up or shut up. You can't! They packaged an investment and in every trade, More
Bruce,
I agree that it would have been helpful for the article to have at least included a sentence or two on Goldman's many frauds. But this would probably just be preaching to the choir, so to speak, because I would think that most readers of WSJ's many articles on Goldman are probably familiar with the frauds and may even be, as the article points out, tired of reading about them.
As there's nothing more stale then yesterday's news, More
Thanks, Scott, for the reasoned and insightful treatment of liberty. I am glad you pointed out the difference between directly and indirectly infringing on rights. I believe that to be an adult adhd symptoms means that you are responsible for your own actions; if you cannot live responsibly, then you should lose the privileges of adulthood, like voting, driving a car and indulging in the adult pleasures.
Do you believe we have the More
Spoken like a true anti-abortion zealot.
1. Abortion has not exploded. It's just become more acceptable, less stigmatized, to talk about it. In the 'good old days' investing in coat hangers was a booming business, as was sending 'wayward' girls to Gladney.
2. Out of wedlock births cannot similarly explode because of the pill. That makes no sense. They explode because of the difficulty of getting an abortion, or, the again decreased More
Mr. Jickeli: So, as a landlord you pay all of the expenses of homeownership, and you reap - and expect - a profit (Return on Investment or ROI) of somewhere in the neighborhood of 11.3%. Have you had that rate of return on investment of return confirmed by an independent audiotr? Does that ROI come frome rent revenue, or from landloard tax subsidies (which are actually tax incentives aka loopholes) or some combination of both? I suggest More
Nick, They have not tried because the USPS has a monopoly on the business -- they can not compete against that setup. I rely on FEDEX's and UPS's track record of profitability that they know delivery. Granted it would be challanging, but with small cheap computers coming out for less than $500, (or 1,136 pieces of equivalent mail) there is a breakeven to setting up a small business up a home with electronic access and charging for More
The pundits seem to be tripping over themselves trying to explain the 10-point drop in consumer confidence level. None I heard got it right. The drop came from public employees, especially educators, as the uncertainty of state and school budgets is coming to the fore. The public employees have been keeping the confidence level relatively high because their jobs were secure while private-sector jobs vanished. Since public employees More
Sorry, but the idea of midlife crisis symptoms battle fatigue doesn't cut it. These are the same people who up the ante on every issue by billing it as a crisis: Cap-and-trade to avoid the climate crisis; a trillion dollar porkulis program to solve the job crisis; pass an unread medical takeover law to solve the insurance crisis; mandate ethanol to address the energy crisis; and so on. In every case, there either was no crisis, or More
Dan, draining Earth definition of emotional intelligence it's water is silly. What do you think makes up the bulk of comets and outer asteroids? Water and other ices. Why climb down the gravity well of Earth for water and then climb back out again when you an strip mine a comet? Science fiction is full of aliens long of tooth and claw with invunerable hides, makes for a great old time monster movie, but evolution on our world suggests More
